It is a pretty unlikely pairing, compost and champagne. But that is only because nobody had thought of it until we did. Life, as we know, has both champagne days and compost days, and they rarely overlap. Yet good compost has more in common with fine wine than you might first imagine.

You reap what you sow. It is true of most things in life, and it is certainly true of wine. Vines are often planted a full five years before they yield their first vintage, and the character of the wine owes everything to the patience and the soil beneath it. There is no shortcut to something excellent. Compost today, champagne tomorrow.

At Oak & Rope we have always taken the long view. The materials we use take their good time to grow, and the things we make are built to last a lifetime at the very least. To design something handsome enough to be given as a present, yet useful enough to encourage us to do the right thing every day, is our favourite kind of work.

So, with a little mischief and a great deal of conviction, we designed a wine cooler that doubles as a compost caddy. Solid oak on the outside, a stainless steel insert and lid within. The insert lifts out and goes happily into the dishwasher. By day it sits by the kitchen sink, gathering potato peelings and eggshells with quiet dignity. By evening it becomes the centrepiece of the table, cradling a chilled bottle in ice.

Those who know us well know that sustainability sits close to our heart. If we can make it a little easier to do the right thing, to compost without surrendering an ounce of style, then we feel we have done our small part. The same handsome box that gathers the kitchen scraps by morning is just as at home holding the bubbles by night.

Oscar Wilde managed to hold mud and bubbles in a single breath, and we like to think our little oak box does much the same. Champagne and compost, the gutter and the stars. The two are never quite as far apart as they seem.
